Rugby at Coleraine Grammar School

There is a very proud history and tradition of rugby in the Coleraine area and the school has been central to its development. The school compete in a large volume of fixtures and competitions on a weekly basis and is one of the top rugby playing schools in the province. CGS has fantastic facilities for rugby with nine well maintained pitches, a floodlit training area, modern changing facilities and a fully equipped strength and conditioning suite.

In recent years CGS has experienced success with a number of  teams and individuals. These have included reaching the Schools’ Cup Semi-Final in 2015 and the Medallion winning the Medallion Plate and Bowl. The 1stXV won the Ulster Schools’ Bowl Competition in 2019 with a 26-16 victory over Friends in the final. The 2nd XV also won the Ulster Schools’ 2ndXV Plate in 2018 & 2019 with victory over Portadown College on both occasions. Junior School teams compete regularly in regional and province wide tournaments and are always very competitive at these events. The school annually hosts one of the biggest junior rugby tournaments across Ireland level with 24 teams competing at Under 12 level. This is one of the highlights on the junior rugby calendar and is a fantastic event for all players, coaches and parents involved.

One of the founding schools, Coleraine Academical Institution has produced a number of high profile stars who have represented both Ulster and Ireland over the years including Jonathan Bell and Andrew Trimble. They also reached the schools’ cup final 33 times winning it on 9 occasions.

Coleraine Grammar School has also had a number of players involved in the Ulster Under 16, 17, 18 and 19 squads in recent years with Rory Telfer, Nathan Ogborne, David Milford, Harry Hughes, Clark Logan, all representing Ulster in Interprovincial fixtures. Rory Telfer is now an established member of the Ulster Senior Squad and Clark Logan signed for the Ulster Academy in July 2024. We have a number of pupils selected in the Ulster Pathway for the Summer 2024 high performance programme:
