Technology offers a wide variety of experiences such as designing, building projects with new materials, researching, CAD 3D modelling, Computer-aided manufacture such as laser cutting, routeing and 3D printing, electronics, programming, building machines and much more.
Technology and Design Curriculum
At Coleraine Grammar School we deliver a broad range of fun and engaging project-based learning activities throughout key stage 3. These give our pupils excellent technical knowledge of a wide range of technological processes, giving them a taste of what the subject can be if they pursue it. Additionally, our pupils develop excellent skills and understanding that will equip them when engaging with products and technology in the real world.
If they choose to study Technology and Design at GCSE or A Level, they will get more developed as designers and analytical thinkers, using the CCEA Technology and Design qualifications to further build knowledge and experience within the fields of design and engineering.
Extra-curricular
Within the department we run a variety of extra-curricular activities such as our popular Lego Club every week. We have also had great successes in a range of competitions such as the British International Education Association (BIEA) STEM competition, The Rotary Club Technology competition, and the F1 in Schools competition. We are always looking for new challenges and to engage our pupils in other aspects of design and technology.
Technology and Design Facilities
As a centre, we specialise in pneumatic and mechanical design. We had a substantial refurbishment (2024) which upgraded our design and manufacturing rooms and has led to new innovative equipment like our 600x800mm bed-size laser cutter, CNC router and 5 3D printers. We also have 3 computer suites with 60 PCs allowing pupils to develop IT skills that go together with modern design and engineering. Teachers use top of the range ActivPanel touchscreens to deliver the curriculum in exciting and engaging ways.
Technology and Design Department Ethos
We are proud of our strong ethos that encourages pupils to be innovative, inquisitive and to own their own learning. We believe that our students should be supported to become the best thinkers and problem-solvers that they can be, be that for the world of work or to be conscientious consumers who are the caretakers of our modern world.
