Hockey

Coleraine Grammar School Hockey Club is blessed with very enthusiastic and knowledgeable coaches, who coach one or two of the seven teams which the school now fields. Participation numbers are extremely positive and there is a strong hockey ethos embedded in the school. Links with local Clubs continue to be fostered with many of the girls playing two games on a Saturday with either Coleraine Ladies or Ballymoney Ladies Hockey Club.

The school play home fixtures at Rugby Avenue in Coleraine. This facility, which is used for Games Lessons, Training and Matches, provides an excellent setting for school hockey. It is a comparatively new addition to the Boroughs sporting facilities, but it has already allowed for a resurgence of Junior Hockey at the local Club level will guarantee the future of Hockey in the Coleraine area for years to come.

As Coleraine High School, the hockey club produced a number of quality hockey players over the years that have played at International schools level including Nicky Henry, Jan, Kate and Amy Magowan and Sammy Jo Greer. Lauren Barr has also represented the full Irish side in 2006 after an outstanding hockey career at the school.

Now as Coleraine Grammar School we have been delighted at the success of many more. A number of girls have been selected for Ulster TDP Squads and recently Kia McCartney and Amy Symington represented Ulster and Sarah Kirgan was selected for Ireland. Sarah was also part of the recent victorious Ulster Team at the UK School Games, September 2021.

In the 2019-20 season, CGS reached the finals of both the Ulster Junior and Senior Plate competitions. The U14’s lost 2-0 to Ballyclare High School, whilst the 1st XI defeated Antrim Grammar 2-1, ensuring CGS its first Ulster title.
