Geography Trip to Iceland 2017

Geography trip to Iceland.

Iceland Diary (25th – 28th October 2017)

Day 1

The CGS Geographers enjoyed some time today on Day 1 of their Icelandic trip in the famous blue lagoon. Here they experienced the joys of warm silica filled
pools, steam rooms and saunas. They all enjoyed the silica rich, algae and lava face masks which apparently makes one look 10 years younger. You may
not recognise them when they return!

Day 2

CGS geographers had a very busy day today with a packed itinerary. The morning started with a visit to a Geothermal Power plant, followed by a trek around
Kerid Volcano where they walked around the crater rim and then descended down the steep slopes into the crater. They then headed towards Gulfoss Waterfall
and witnessed the spectacle of a double drop and the thundering noise of the water. This was followed by a visit to Geysir to witness Strokkur shoot
boiling water into the air and then a visit to Thingviller National Park to walk between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. To finish
off an energetic day everyone participated in an hour of ice skating, after which they returned to the hotel for some well deserved food and rest

Day 3

CGS geographers had another action packed day and experienced, amongst other things, Icelandic weather. On a very wet and incredibly windy day they headed
out on a south shore excursion, stopping off en route to a rock, mineral and fossil museum. This was then followed by a visit to the Lava Centre where
they experienced the sights and sounds of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, even passing through a shaking corridor and another smoke filled corridor
to see what it would feel like in an earthquake and volcano. Later they travelled to Skógafoss to walk behind this famous waterfall, visited an incredibly
windy black sand beach with basalt columns and finally stopped off at Seljalandsfoss waterfall to witness some of the spray being blown up the waterfall.
Some were disappointed that they did not get an opportunity to climb the 300+ steps to the top but the weather prevented this happening. Despite the
wet day everyone seemed to have enjoyed the experiences and sites of this amazing country.
