Legacy Wall Fundraising Initiative

Coleraine Grammar School Proudly Unveils Sports Legacy Wall

On a bright and memorable afternoon on Thursday 23rd April 2026, Coleraine Grammar School proudly unveiled its new Sports Legacy Wall, located beside the War Memorial Pavilion on Ballycairn Road marking a significant milestone in celebrating the school’s rich sporting heritage.

The event brought together pupils, staff, alumni, and members of the wider community to honour the achievements of those who have represented the school with distinction across a range of sports.

Among the special guests was past pupil Fergus Bryce, who represented rowing. In 2021 and 2022, a few years after first learning to row at CGS, Fergus represented Ireland at U19 World Rowing Championships. He recently competed at the British Universities Championships Head for Queen’s University, where he achieved outstanding success winning gold in the Double Sculls and silver in the Quadruple Sculls.

Hockey and cricket were proudly represented by Kenya and Stephen McCartney on behalf of past pupil Kia McCartney, who represented the U18 Irish Hockey team at the European level and continues her international  cricket career on the Ireland Woman’s team continuing on from representing Ireland at the ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup.

Rugby achievements were also recognised by past pupil and Ireland Rugby Player Andrew Trimble during his recent visit back to the school grounds for the recent Year tournament.

“I’m delighted to be one of the first names on Coleraine Grammar School’s Sports Legacy Wall, being launched today at the school. Every name has an individual story to tell, whether that was a pupil going on to play representative sport or the thousands of girls and boys who enjoy playing their sport with good friends. It’s a great legacy for the Inst, the High School and Coleraine Grammar School and I would encourage former and current pupils to get involved. All funds raised will contribute to providing facilities for current and future boys and girls to continue the journey of sporting success and enjoyment.”

Andrew earned over 70 international caps, winning the Six Nations Championship for Ireland (including the 2014 title), and representing Ireland at the Rugby World Cup.

All three past pupils are amongst others who have gone on to represent their sport at U19, U23, and senior international levels achieving success built on the strong foundations laid during their time at school. Supported by excellent facilities and dedicated coaching, they exemplify the remarkable breadth of sporting talent nurtured within the school.

The Sports Legacy Wall has been created to recognise past, present, and future pupils, as well as contributors who have shaped sport at Coleraine Grammar School. Members of the community are invited to become part of this lasting tribute by purchasing engraved bricks.

Funds raised through the initiative will be reinvested directly into the school’s sports facilities supporting both the maintenance of existing infrastructure and the development of new opportunities for young athletes.

This initiative builds on recent successes, including the opening of the school’s state-of-the-art hockey pitch last year. Looking ahead, the school has ambitious plans to develop a top-class strength and conditioning suite to further enhance training opportunities for its students.

The school is encouraging the wider community across the Causeway Coast and Glens area to support the initiative and leave their mark for future generations.
