Boat Naming Ceremony
The Headmaster, Dr Carruthers, was delighted to welcome invited guests to the boat naming ceremony held at the Coleraine Grammar School boat house
on Friday 7th April 2017.
The guests were there to celebrate the arrival and naming of a brand new boat bought specifically to assist in introducing the joys of rowing to all
age groups. The rowing coach Mr Johnston explained how beneficial it is to teach the technical skill of rowing in a safe stable boat before moving
onto sleeker faster but less stable craft.
His vision going forward is to get parents and teachers involved in rowing in the hope that they get a love for the sport and give back in terms of
supervision or coaching in the long term. In the short term parents and teachers will be asked for a donation to use the boat as a method of pleasant
fund raising for the school rowing club.
The boat and oars were purchased thanks to the generosity of four main sponsors
Brian Scott Engineering (Garvagh),
Coleraine Old Boys Association,
Golf Links Hotel (Portrush) and
The Ulster Branch of Rowing Ireland.
The Lead sponsor was the Golf Links Hotel; Mr Peter Wilson the managing director of same addressed the group stating how proud he was to sponsor and
support the new boat at Coleraine Grammar School Rowing Club. He went on to explain that the boat’s name ‘Deerstalker’ relates to The Deerstalker
Bar & Grill situated within the Golflinks Hotel, Portrush.
Dr Carruthers thanked all four representatives of the sponsors for their generosity in these difficult financial times and wished the Rowing Club every
success with their new boat!
Many thanks to David McDonald for the photographs.
