Coleraine GS Rugby Club Season Review & Rugby Awards Information 2018-2019
Coleraine Grammar School held their annual rugby awards dinners at Bob and Berts in Coleraine over three evenings last week. Over 180 Pupils & Staff were in attendance and a number of awards were issued to players from Year 8 to Year 14 to reward individual success and commitment as well as reflect upon some of the rugby highlights of the season.
Reflecting upon the season the Under 12s led by Mr Millen, Mr Patterson & Mr Shiels were very competitive again this season with over 40 players in attendance at training on a regular basis and pupils also getting an opportunity to play in a large number of fixtures and tournaments throughout the year. The group will look forward to 15-a-side rugby with great enthusiasm and anticipation after a solid start to their rugby careers at school.
The Under 13s led by Mr Overend & Mr Stewart finished their season off in style winning the Cambridge House Under 13 Competition on the last day of the season. The team have a lot of talent, a great attitude towards the game and be looking to build upon the momentum gained towards the end of the season.
The Under 14s coached by Mr Gaston & Mr Alejo had a magnificent season winning all four Under 14 competitions held across the province and winning the majority of their regular season fixtures. The team won the Foyle College, Carrick Grammar, Belfast Inst & Ballymena Academy tournaments in emphatic fashion. The U14Bs also competed regularly and had a fantastic attitude and commitment to training. This was a season to remember for everyone involved and the boys can look forward to next year with confidence.
The Medallion XV led by Mr Beggs, Mr Palmer, Mr Greatorex and Mr Scott had a very strong season. The team played some exceptional rugby and defeated a number of the top ranked sides throughout the season. In the Shield the team had a fantastic win away to Wallace High School in the 4th Round before narrowly missing out to a strong Sullivan side in the Quarter Finals in another tough draw away from home.
The 2ndXV led by Mr Black had a strong end to the season after narrowly losing out to Sullivan 2ndXV in the 2ndXV Cup. The team defeated Strabane Grammar, Cambridge House, Grosvenor GS & Portadown College to win the 2ndXV Plate in clinical fashion and they played some fantastic running rugby along the way.
The 1stXV coached by Mr Boyd & Mr Van Der Byl finished the season strongly after agonisingly losing out to Dalriada in the last play of the game in the Schools’ Cup. The team re-grouped, showed good character and went on to win the Ulster Schools’ Bowl Competition defeating Larne Grammar, Belfast High School & finally Friends School Lisburn in an exciting final at Rainey Old Boys Rugby Club.
Overall this has been another really positive and encouraging season for the school with the Under 13s, Under 14s, 2ndXV & 1stXV all picking up Silverware. A number of players have gained interprovincial recognition including 1stXV Captain Oscar Egan who is currently pushing for an International place in the Ireland Schools team. Thanks must be given to the players, coaches, parents, and volunteers who have shown passion and dedication towards rugby in the school this year. Thanks must also be given to Bob & Berts, CP Hire & Logans Travel for their invaluable financial support again this year. Players and coaches will now enjoy a well-earned rest before preparations begin for the 2019/20 season.
