There has been a chemical incident at Coleraine Grammar School which resulted in hazardous gases being released in a confined area. No pupils were on site due to the Easter holiday and three members of staff were advised to attend hospital. The ambulance, fire and police services attended and the situation is fully under control.

The school is working proactively with the emergency services to ensure a full clean-up takes place as soon as possible.

Chemical Incident Update

I’m sure you are aware by now that there was a chemical incident at Coleraine Grammar School at about 4pm on Tuesday 31 March which resulted in hazardous gas being released in a confined area. No pupils were on site due to the Easter holiday, three members of staff were advised to attend hospital and all three were discharged on Tuesday evening. It was chlorine gas and the incident happened in the swimming pool plant room.

The ambulance, fire and police services attended, and the situation was fully under control by 7pm.

The fire service returned on 1 April and confirmed that zero chlorine gas levels could be detected anywhere. We are now working with specialist contractors to ensure the safe removal of any residual chemicals from the plant room well before the beginning of next term on 13 April.
